چکیده

Under the auspices of the Indian Council of Medical Research, a third assessment of the mass BCG campaign in India was carried out from 1955-58. It is a continuation of the work started by the WHO, of evaluating the level of allergy among groups vaccinated in the campaign. WHO team used 5 TU RT 14, 20, 21, while the present assessment team used 5 TU RT 22. A total of 18,367 school children distributed over 262 schools in 169 different localities were retested for post vaccination tuberculin sensitivity. The groups were vaccinated in mass BCG campaign with 91 different batches of vaccine produced in Madras. The interval between vaccination and retest varied from 11⁄2 to 42 months.

Empire and Alternatives: Swietenia febrifuga and the Cinchona Substitutes

This paper focuses on a cinchona substitute, the Swietenia febrifuga (also known as Soymida febrifuga), whose medical virtues for treating intermittent fevers were discovered in India around 1791 by William Roxburgh, the English East India Company (EEIC) surgeon in charge of the Company’s botanical garden in Samulcottah (north of Chennai or Madras). The bark was subsequently subjected to severa...

Variolation, Vaccination and Popular Resistance in Early Colonial South India

The campaigns to prevent smallpox in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are commonly understood as the first attempts of large-scale state-sponsored medical intervention in society as such. 1 Before the discovery of the cowpox vaccine inoculation with variolous matterÐknown as variolationÐwas the most widespread preventive against the disease. This practice was well established in parts of...

Gains from diversification on convex combinations: A majorization and stochastic dominance approach

By incorporating both majorization theory and stochastic dominance theory, this paper presents a general theory and a unifying framework for determining the diversification preferences of risk-averse investors and conditions under which they would unanimously judge a particular asset to be superior. In particular, we develop a theory for comparing the preferences of different convex combination...

Improved immunogenicity of tetanus toxoid by Brucella abortus S19 LPS adjuvant.

BACKGROUND Adjuvants are used to increase the immunogenicity of new generation vaccines, especially those based on recombinant proteins. Despite immunostimulatory properties, the use of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as an adjuvant has been hampered due to its toxicity and pyrogenicity. Brucella abortus LPS is less toxic and has no pyrogenic properties compared to LPS from other gram negati...

Steady electrodiffusion in hydrogel-colloid composites: macroscale properties from microscale electrokinetics.

A rigorous microscale electrokinetic model for hydrogel-colloid composites is adopted to compute macroscale profiles of electrolyte concentration, electrostatic potential, and hydrostatic pressure across membranes that separate electrolytes with different concentrations. The membranes are uncharged polymeric hydrogels in which charged spherical colloidal particles are immobilized and randomly d...
